EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW

Tucked away in the mountains of southwestern Mexico, Oaxaca is a magical city loaded with colorful markets, rich historical sites and vibrant culture. It’s no wander that Oaxaca was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

We’ll begin and end our journey surrounded by the elegance of Oaxaca city. From there we will spend a few days in the mountain forest just outside of Oaxaca. This itinerary is packed with experiences that support local communities, highlight traditional customs, connect with women leaders and fill your soul with the spiritual energy that embodies Oaxaca.

Our local guide is one of the founders of ONCE- a local tour operator that specializes in community-based tourism. This trip is for any woman who is looking to uncover the history and long-standing traditions of this very mystic place.

We begin our journey in the colorful city of Oaxaca and we’ll explore this architectural treasure and discover the rich cultural gems it has to offer. We will visit contemporary artistic projects led by women while wandering through the charming streets of the city.(B,L)

D A Y T H R E E | SACRED FOODS & POTTERY

We explore the Valley of Tlacolula, a place that has been inhabited by humans for 10,000 years. It is also the oldest place known in which teocintle (known as maiz) was domesticated. We’ll visit an archaeological site as well as unique projects that involve agricultural practices, pottery and traditional cooking demonstration. (B,L)

D A Y F O U R | WOMEN OF TEOTITLAN

Today we visit Teotitlán del Valle, the Zapotec community famous for its unique textile tradition in exquisite colorful woolen rugs. Our local hosts will welcome us with open arms to share their knowledge. We will make chocolate, learn about natural dyes, and also find out about traditional candle making. This is an unforgettable journey which explores the roots and history of a community which is both rich in culture and ancient traditions. (B,L)

D A Y F I V E FOREST RETREAT & INNER JOURNEY

Today we leave the city of Oaxaca behind and travel to the magical forest in the Sierra Sur. On the way to the mountains we’ll visit a mezcal distillery and learn about the process of this enigmatic spirit. (B,L,D)

D A Y S I X | HERBAL MEDICINE & ESSENTIAL OILS

We will wake up in the clouds, surrounded by nature. We’ll spend our day experiencing a fascinating project devoted to herbal medicine while exploring botany for body and soul. We will connect with the plant kingdom through a distillation workshop and learn about this ancestral method of obtaining essential oils from native plants. (B,L,D)

D A Y S E V E N | CACAO CEREMONY

Today we will enjoy the forest at our own pace. We will have the morning free and at sunset we will celebrate our trip with a women’s circle and a cacao ceremony: an ancestral ritual using words, song and the medicine of cacao to connect to our deeper selves. (B,L,D)

We leave the mountains behind and head towards Oaxaca City to enjoy the last day of our trip. Today is a free day to walk around, shop, visit museums and markets on our own. In the evening we will have a special farewell dinner. (B,D)
